“Matter of Balance” class offered at Poultney Young at Heart Senior Center starting March 18

POULTNEY, Vt. – Southwestern Vermont Council on Aging and Poultney Young at Heart Senior Center are teaming up to offer the area’s first session of “Matter of Balance,” a free, in-person class aimed at helping older Vermonters improve strength, balance and flexibility, and reduce their risk of falling.

“Matter of Balance is a fun and engaging class that implements a number of practical strategies for helping individuals prevent falls, both at home and out in the community,” said Maddy Gardner, Nutrition and Wellness Coordinator with SVCOA. “Whether you’re someone who has fallen in the past or who limits activity for fear of falling, or an individual who simply wants to improve on your physical wellness, this is a valuable class offering that can be enjoyed by a wide range of older Vermonters.”

Throughout the “Matter of Balance” class, participants will learn how to view falls as controllable, set goals for increasing activity, make changes to reduce fall risks at home, and exercise to increase strength and balance.

The “Matter of Balance” class, which will run for eight weeks beginning on March 18, 2022, will be held each Friday from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Poultney Young at Heart Senior Center at 206 Furnace Street in Poultney, Vermont.

The session is limited to 12 participants, and those interested in participating are asked to preregister by calling Poultney Young at Heart Senior Center at 802-287-9200.

“Matter of Balance” is sponsored by Southwestern Vermont Council on Aging as part of its evidence-based falls prevention programming. For more information about this program or other SVCOA wellness offerings, please contact the SVCOA HelpLine at 802-786-5990.
