2023 Walk to End Alzheimer's

The Southwestern Vermont Council on Aging (SVCOA) is excited to announce its participation in the upcoming Walk to End Alzheimer's, scheduled to take place on September 23rd at Main St Park in Rutland, VT. SVCOA will be participating this year as the "SVCOA Purple Warriors”, dedicated to raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support, and research.

Community Health Day - Castleton

The Community Health Days will feature a range of critical offerings, including free Stay Steadi screenings – designed to help prevent falls – as well as comprehensive health screenings conducted by registered nurses. For individuals over 65 without a Medicare Part D plan, this initiative provides a unique opportunity to receive flu, shingles, pneumonia, and tetanus vaccinations free of charge. These vaccinations are essential in safeguarding older Vermonters against preventable diseases, especially during the upcoming flu season, anyone over the age of 18- 64 can also receive vaccinations free of charge. In addition to the health screenings and vaccinations, these events will offer resources and educational materials focused on self-advocacy during medical appointments. Empowering our older Vermonters with the knowledge and tools to effectively communicate with healthcare professionals ensures that they receive the best possible care, fostering a sense of agency in their medical journey.

SVCOA Volunteer Training - Oct 2023

Join us for the Southwestern Vermont Council on Aging's October Volunteer Training on the vital subject of anti-ageism. We invite you to be a part of this informative session taking place on October 11th, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM at our SVCOA office located at 143 Maple St, Rutland, VT. Come learn about the importance of combating age-related biases and stereotypes in our community. Weekly Class

Powerful Tools for Caregivers is a National Evidence-Based educational program that teaches you not only how to be a more effective caregiver but also how to better take care of yourself. The classes are FREE and open to family caregivers in the community.

Memory Cafe is an invaluable opportunity to connect, socialize, and engage in enjoyable activities in a supportive setting. This gathering serves as a safe space for individuals affected by memory loss to interact with others who understand their experiences. It fosters a sense of belonging, promotes emotional well-being, and encourages participants to share their stories, memories, and talents.
